The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr HydeStage Play
An exciting and brilliant hour long, two person live radio play adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Gothic chiller ‘The Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde’.
Robert Louis Stevenson’s novel is a classic tale of the duality of human nature, how we can have both good and evil inside of us. And how important it is for us to acknowledge this - for if we don’t we can end up being taken over by or giving in to our worst desires. At the time it was written, it was also very much commentary on the duality of Victorian society - the difference which existed between the outward, expected rules of propriety and respectability and the inner & private world of an individual’s life and desires. In many ways this is still relevant to the world we live in today, especially where social media allows us to create and project an idealised, outward version of ourselves, which may be very different to the inner, lived experience of an individuals’ life. This adaptation is set in the Victorian era, but has a modern sensibility - all the characters are recognisable people we might meet today, their wishes and desires very much the wishes and desires we still have today. |
Victorian Ghost StoriesStage Play
Number Two, Melrose Square by Theo Gift & The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe
A double bill of classic Victorian ghost stories, adapted for stage by veteran writer Sophie Flack, with a new musical score by composer and sound designer Dan Skelt.
As Autumn leaves started to fall and Winter approached, Victorians would gather around the fire and tell scary stories, shutting out the cold and the dark, reconnecting with family and friends over terrifying tales. Both a reminder of the ever closeness of death and a celebration of the survival of life, these stories proliferated in the penny press and periodicals. One of the most popular of these was ‘Number Two, Melrose Place’ by Theo Gift (the pen name of Dorothy Havers) a writer whose was sponsored by Dickens himself. Her claustrophobic and terrifying tale serves as a timely warning to be wary of underpriced rental properties - particularly those with sinister servants! And it asks us - are the monsters outside, or are they within? "I fear that the period will sooner or later arrive when I must abandon life and reason together, in some struggle with the grim phantasm, Fear..."

‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ is perhaps Edgar Allan’s Poe’s most famous story - a gothic masterpiece and exploration of the themes of loneliness, isolation, fear, madness and the relationship between the body and the soul. In our gender-switched production, the melancholy and terrified Rayne Usher sends a desperate letter to her childhood friend - begging her to come at once.

A Christmas Carol
Stage Play
Adapted from the novel by Charles Dickens A journey with Ebenezer Scrooge in a festive tale of self-knowledge, regret and redemption...
Going back to the fable's roots as a classic Victorian ghost story, there will be scares, laughs and heart-breaks along the way, in this new adaptation by veteran writer Sophie Flack, directed by Artistic Associate Kerren Garner with a new horror score by Dan Skelt. "This fantastic performance really captures the spirit and morals of Dickens' book. The values of looking after the needy and vulnerable are just as relevant today as they were in 1843 and Lantern Light's production captivated our students' hearts and minds. The production is true to the book and makes clever use of an engaging narrator to thread the narrative together. The quality of the acting was superb and simply but effectively put together. Thank you for putting on this show!"
Ruth Nilsson, Davison CE High School for Girls |
"A satisfying and faithful new adaptation!... Lantern Light's USP is the ability to fit venue and show, and St Nicholas' Church, probably Brighton's oldest building, is a terrific venue. Eerie sound and lighting design by Dan Skelt highlight rood screen, dais, long aisles and real candlelight, with London fog drifting about the ivy-wreathed stone pillars creating atmosphere, visuals and mood which a theatre just can't offer."
